I remember the exact moment I encountered Langley Castle for the first time; it wowed me completely! Turrets, heavy iron studded doors, seven feet thick walls, narrow arched windows, rich hanging tapestries and afternoon tea by the blazing log fire in the sumptuous drawing room, I was in heaven!! Langley Castle is located in the beautiful South Tyne Valley and a mere stone's throw away from the world heritage site of Hadrian's Wall. Guest room are beautifully decorated. Each has private facilities and all command magnificent views of the Castle itself.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CASTLE
Built originally in 1350 and regarded as one of the few medieval fortified Castle hotels in England, Langley Castle has retained its architectural integrity. The last 600 years of the Castle's history has been turbulent indeed and includes the story of the third Earl, James, and his brother Charles who took part in the Jacobite uprisings of 1715. Subsequently executed at the Tower of London a cross still stands today by the roadside, close to the Castle, commemorating their loyalty to the King of Scotland (their lawful sovereign) which reads:
In memory of James and Charles
Viscounts Langley
Beheaded on Tower Hill
24th Feb 1716 and 8th Dec 1746
For loyalty to their lawful Sovereign
In 1882 local historian Cadwallader Bates and his wife Josephine purchased the Castle whereupon it became their life's work to restore it. Josephine rebuilt the original chapel on the Castle's roof in memory of her husband. Today they both rest in the Castle grounds.
